The Connecticut Light and Power Company has hired a professional tree maintenance company to prune and remove trees along the public roadways in Canton. Tree maintenance work will be done to improve the quality of electric service to CL&P’s customers in the area. To determine eligibility, families must fill out an application before September 3, available at the Town of Canton Senior/Social Services Office, located in the lower level of the Canton Community Center at 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton CT 06019. Diapers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be available for pickup in mid-September. Families will be notified when the diapers arrive. Please call 860-693-5811 if you have any questions.
Community Renewal Team, Inc. is offering free two-month supplies of diapers to eligible families in its service area of Hartford and Middlesex Counties. The diapers have been made available by the Connecticut Diaper Bank through federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funding.

AUDIT NOTICE
August 19, 2010
At 1:00 pm on August 25, 2010, at the Canton Town Hall, a post-election (primary) hand count audit of the optical scan voting equipment will be conducted by the Canton Registrar of Voters in accordance with Public Act 07-194. The Town Clerk of Canton will begin by conducting a random selection of the offices to be audited. This audit is open to the public.
The primary purpose of the hand count audit is to assess how well the optical scan voting machines functioned in an actual election and to ensure that votes cast using these machines are counted properly and accurately. This is not a recount where the focus is reviewing each ballot to determine voter intent in rendering a final vote count. Rather, the audit tests whether the machines accurately counted ballots that were properly marked.

THERE ARE THREE (3) EVENTS TAKING PLACE IN CANTON ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 22ND THAT WILL IMPACT TRAFFIC.
LOBSTER LOOP ROAD RACE:
DOWD AVENUE AT ROUTE 44 WILL BE CLOSED STARTING AT 6:30 AM. AT APPROXIMATELY 8:00 AM ALL OF DOWD AVENUE WILL BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC. OTHER ROADS IMPACTED BY THE RACE ARE SYMONDS AVENUE, GILDERSLEEVE AVENUE, MAPLE AVENUE, DYER AVENUE, HILL STREET AND EAST HILL ROAD. THE RACE SHOULD BE OVER BY 11:30 AM ALLOWING FOR TRAFFIC TO RESUME. TO GET AROUND THIS EVENT, USE ROUTE 44 AND ROUTE 179. PARKING FOR THE EVENT IS AT THE FIRE STATION ON CANTON SPRINGS ROAD.
THERE IS NO PARKING ON CANTON VALLEY CIRCLE OR IN ANY BUSINESS ON ROUTE 44.
LITCHFIELD TRIATHLON:
THE BICYCLE PORTION OF THE TRIATHLON WILL BE COMING THROUGH CANTON STARTING AT APPROXIMATELY 8:00AM AND ENDING AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30 AM. THE BICYCLES WILL BE TRAVELING EAST ON ROUTE 44 FROM NEW HARTFORD, TURNING RIGHT (SOUTH) ONTO ROUTE 179 AND THEN TURNING RIGHT (WEST) ONTO ROUTE 202. THERE WILL BE PARTIAL LANE AND ROAD SHOULDER CLOSURES. PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN PASSING THE BICYCLISTS AND AT THESE INTERSECTIONS.
MOTORCYCLE RIDE:
THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS MOTORCYCLE DREAM RIDE WILL BE IN CANTON AND IMPACTING TRAFFIC ON TWO (2) SEPARATE TIMES AND ROUTES.
THE FIRST GROUP (400 – 600 MOTORCYCLES) WILL ENTER CANTON AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30 AM TRAVELING EAST ON ROUTE 44 FROM NEW HARTFORD. THE GROUP WILL THEN TURN LEFT (NORTH) ONTO ROUTE 179 (CHERRY BROOK ROAD) AND CONTINUE TO ROUTE 309. EXPECT LENGTHY DELAYS AT INTERSECTIONS.
THE SECOND GROUP (1500 – 2500 MOTORCYCLES) WILL ENTER CANTON AT APPROXIMATELY 12:00 PM TRAVELING WEST ON ROUTE 309 FROM SIMSBURY. THE GROUP WILL TURN RIGHT (NORTH) ONTO ROUTE 179 (CHERRY BROOK ROAD)
AND WILL CONTINUE INTO BARKHAMSTED. THE GROUP WILL RETURN TO CANTON BETWEEN 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM TRAVELING EAST ON ROUTE 44 FROM NEW HARTFORD. THE GROUP WILL THEN TURN RIGHT (SOUTH) ONTO ROUTE 179, CROSS ROUTE 202, CONTINUE THROUGH COLLINSVILLE ON ROUTE 179 INTO BURLINGTON. Canton Police Department
Press Release
The Canton Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Matthew Keepin has graduated from the Connecticut Police Academy, 328th Session, on July 28, 2010. Officer Keepin started the Police Academy on February 19, 2010. Officer Keepin will start his Fielded Training Program which runs approximately 14 weeks.
The Canton Police Department would also like to welcome Officer Jonathan Saucier. Officer Saucier has an Associate’s Degree from Tunxis Community College and has a Bachelors Degree from Central Connecticut State University. Officer Saucier currently lives in Plainville, Connecticut. Officer Saucier will start the Connecticut Police Academy on August 27, 2010.
The training period for each recruit, from the time they enter the police academy to the time they complete their Field Training Program, is long and challenging. The training they receive will allow them to develop the necessary skills and experience they will require to work as a police officer for the Town of Canton.
I am very pleased to have these two officers start their Law Enforcement career with the Canton Police Department.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION ALERT
The Town will be paving portions of Washburn and Dry Bridge Roads this Thursday, July 15th.
Also, on Monday, July 19th, we will be grinding up portions of Gracey Road. Repaving will follow and we will alert you as to when that will happen.

Tucker Herd, a 14 year old English Springer Spaniel from Canton Center, won Canton’s Top Dog contest and was awarded tag #1 for the next 12 months. All dogs in town who purchased a new license by June 30th were entered into the drawing.

Canton Community Brunch
On Tuesday July 20th, Canton Senior/Social Services will be hosting a free Community Brunch to introduce the changes to the department & to honor the people and organizations that are helping our community behind the scenes. This brunch will feature food from a number of organizations in the area, and volunteers and the Board of Selectmen will be serving, as well as raffle & other incentives from local businesses.
This special event is open only to Canton residents. People who are new to the Canton community, people who have worked with Social Services in the past, older adults, and growing families are encouraged to sign-up.
Seating is limited, so early sign-up is encouraged.
If you are interested in attending, please contact the Senior/Social Services Office at (860) 693-5811.
Proceeds will go toward free community special events.

Town Cooling Center
Town officials would like to make residents aware that the Community Center will be available until 8:00 pm tonight to offer residents relief from the heat. With tempuratures expected to reach as high as 100 degrees, it is important that people take precautions to avoid being overcome from heat exhaustion. The Community Center, which is located at 40 Dyer Avenue, also houses the Senior Center and the Library. The Senior Center will be open until 5:00 pm and the Library will be open until 8:00 pm.

The July 4th Holiday weekend is here and we would like everyone to have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Please drive safely and DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. Also, remember to wear your seat belts and DO NOT drive distracted.
The only safe way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted at a state approved site by state-licensed pyro-technicians.
All FIREWORKS (with the exception of sparklers) ARE ILLEGAL in Connecticut and may not be sold, purchased or used with the EXCEPTION of regulated fireworks displays by state licensed, professional pyrotechnicians at sites which have been approved by state and local law officials.
The Canton Police Department will respond to and investigate any complaint regarding fireworks.
