Missing Barn Owl

Canton Raptor Care on Bunker Hill Rd, is searching for their missing Barn Owl named Luna. Luna is an educational birds and imprint, which means she can not be released and would not be able to survive in the wild or find food and hunt. She is also very shy and spooks easily.

If you see or know any details about Luna’s whereabouts please contact Teresa Kramer at Canton Raptor Care 860-693-6255.

Several groups have been notified, flyers have been sent out, volunteers have hiked, stayed up for several nights, and also sent emails, online alerts and Facebook info. So please if you have any information regarding the missing owl or see the owl please contact the number above.

Reservations Now Available for 2nd Bus to Mohegan Sun Casino: Fundraiser Benefits Canton High School Class of 2011 Substance-Free Graduation Party
 
 
A flurry of reservations quickly filled up an April 9 bus headed to Mohegan Sun Casino, so organizers of the Canton High School Class of 2011 Substance-Free Graduation Party are now taking reservations for a second bus. 
 
 

 The Mohegan Sun trip is both a major fundraiser for the graduation party and a great deal: at $40 per person, the trip includes a $15 meal voucher good at any casino restaurant and $15 in Big Wheel bets.
 
 

 The bus departs Canton High School at 5 p.m. Sat., April 9 and leaves Mohegan Sun at midnight, arriving at the school at approximately 1 a.m.
 
 

 The trip is open to all. However, seats are limited so early reservations are recommended. Reservations and payment are due by March 8. To reserve a seat, contact Peter Soifer at 693-9479 or psoifer@comcast.net. Mail your check, payable to “CHS 2011 Graduation Party”, to Peter Soifer, 9 Bidwell Farm Rd., Canton, CT 06019.

On Tuesday, February 22, 2011, there was a house fire that destroyed a house on Bristol Drive in Canton, displacing the homeowners and their young child. 
 
Canton Senior/Social Services is coordinating a drive to support these folks who are part of the Canton community.   
 
Please send or drop off gift cards for food, clothing or furniture off at the Senior/Social Services Office at 40 Dyer Avenue (Canton Community Center) during office hours.
 
This office is accepting monetary donations for the homeowners.

HEATING ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
 TO ELIGIBLE CANTON HOUSEHOLDS
 
The Citizen’s Energy (Joe 4 Oil) program can provide a free oil or kerosene delivery of up to 100 gallons for eligible households.  As their income guideline limit is 60% of state median income, IF YOU RECEIVED ENERGY ASSISTANCE THROUGH SENIOR/SOCIAL SERVICES and heat your home with oil or kerosene your household should be eligible.  Here are some program procedures:
 
1.       Household must call for an application to 1-877-563-4645 (toll free and very busy) or 1-617-338-6300 (not a toll free number)
 
On line applications are not being accepted. 
 
Operator will ask for the following information: (name, address, phone #, # persons in household, ages of children in household, reason for applying, name of your fuel vendor}
 
2.       Application is then mailed to customer along with an income verification survey which must be signed by customer.  Forms are then to be returned to Citizen’s Energy.
 
3    Citizen’s Energy will then review paperwork.  If household is eligible, they will receive a voucher in mail authorizing household to notify vendor of their voucher to receive a free one time fuel delivery of up to 100 free gallons.  
 
4.   Please note: When vendor delivers and tank will not support a full 100 gallons, vendor will not return to make another delivery for the difference.  It is to be a one time delivery of up to 100 free gallons. 
 
However, this is not a quick turnaround program.  The entire process may take up to several weeks to receive application in mail, return to Citizen’s and then receive voucher for delivery.
 
 
If you anticipate needing oil or kerosene delivery within the next few weeks and will have trouble paying, please START THE PROCESS NOW.

The Connecticut Alert Emergency Notification System uses the state’s Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) database for location-based notifications to the public for life-threatening emergencies.  But the E9-1-1 database includes only traditional wire-line telephone numbers in the state (the “land line” phone you may have in your home).  CT Alert ENS Citizen Sign Up allows you to add other means of communication to the CT Alert ENS, in addition to your current home phone “land line” if you have one.

The Public Works Department will begin removing snow from Main Street, River Street and Market Street and Center Street (by the old library) on Saturday, February 12th beginning at 4am.  Please refrain from overnight parking on these streets on Friday, February 11th through the early morning hours of Saturday, February 12th.  You may use the Town Hall lot during this time.  Remember, if you overnight park in the Town Hall lot, notify the Police Dispatcher at 860-693-0221 and supply your marker number and contact information.  The snow removal is expected to be completed by 8am on Saturday morning.

Single Stream Recycling is here!
 
At the Canton Transfer Station, you can now dispose of your recycling via a “Single Stream” method.  With Single Stream Recycling, you no longer have to sort glass, plastic, paper and metal within your recycling bin.  Just mix and dump all your recycling together…they will be sorted once they’re delivered to the recycling center.
