Parking Ban

Just a reminder…

An overnight parking ban is in effect on all town streets until April 1st.  In addition, whenever possible, please refrain from daytime street parking during the height of the storm so that our Public Works Department can do the most effective job at plowing the streets.  Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and patience during this most trying of winter seasons!  Stay safe and THINK SPRING!

CRT Energy Assistance/VITA Tax Prep
Open Intake Day Jan. 29

Eligible customers may receive help for heating bills or
free tax prep at 555 Windsor Street

Community Renewal Team, Inc. will host a walk-in Energy Assistance and VITA income tax event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, January 29 at its 555 Windsor Street Office in Hartford. CRT staff will process applications for those seeking financial assistance for their heating bills and complete free tax preparation and e-filing.

CRT intake specialists also will process Matching Payment Plan applications for Operation Fuel at the event. Customers using all types of heating fuel-electric, natural gas, oil, kerosene, wood and propane-may apply. Both returning and new customers, including recently laid off residents, are encouraged to apply now to avoid long waits toward the end of the winter. Energy applicants must bring with them the following documents:
 
·        Social Security Number and date of birth for all household members
·        Current rent statement (if heat is included)
·        For electric or natural gas: Current utility bill in name of a household member over 18
·        For oil, kerosene, wood or propane:  Name of fuel company
·        Proof of current income (pay stubs, bank statements) for all adults for 4 weeks prior to application date
·        Documentation for Social Security and other monthly benefits, such as bank statements
·        Statements for checking, savings, credit union accounts, stocks, bonds and CD’s

CRT’s three Hartford Neighborhood Centers will be closed during the event. Customers with appointments at the centers during that time should come to 555 Windsor Street. VITA free tax preparation is available to families making up to $49,000 in income. For more information about what to bring to the event or to make an appointment for a different date,

Canton Senior & Social Services is sponsoring AARP Tax Preparation Assistance from February 3rd through April 13th
at the Canton Community Center. 
This is a FREE service & is open to people of all ages.

Next Coffee with the Cups – February 3 from 8-9 a.m.

One of the core missions of the Canton Police Department is community policing.

 

 

The partnership between the community, businesses, government, schools, media and law enforcement plays an integral role in reducing crime and improving the overall quality of life.

 

 

To ensure this philosophy is supported, the Canton Police Department will host, on the first Thursday of each month, a “Coffee with the Cops” and our next one will be on Thursday, February 3 from 8-9 a.m.

 

 

The event will take place at 8:00 a.m. at the Canton Police Station at 45 River Road (Route 179).

 

 

All members of the Canton community – residents, businesses, government officials and media – are invited to attend.

Snow Removal in Collinsville on January 15th

 

The Public Works Department will begin removing snow from Main Street, River Street and Market Street on Saturday, January 15th beginning at 4am.  Please refrain from overnight parking on these streets on Friday, January 14th through the early morning hours of Saturday, January 15th.  You may use the Town Hall lot during this time.  Remember, if you overnight park in the Town Hall lot, notify the Police Dispatcher at 860-693-0221 and supply your marker number and contact information.  The snow removal is expected to be completed by 8am on Saturday morning.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Notice is hereby given to the electors of the Town of Canton and those qualified taxpayers lawfully entitled to vote in Canton Town Meetings pursuant to Section 7-6 of the Connecticut General Statutes that the Annual Town Meeting will be commenced on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Auditorium, 4 Market Street, Collinsville, Connecticut, to:

1) Update from the Permanent Municipal Building Committee on the Town of Canton’s highway garage relocation project.


2) Discuss recent police programs and long range planning for the Police Department.

3) Discuss the results of the pavement management survey and its impact on future budgeting.

 

In accordance with the Town Charter, no binding votes will be taken.

Canton Police Department – Events Reminder

 

COFFEE WITH THE COPS:  JANUARY 6, 2011

 

One of the core missions of the Canton Police Department is community policing.

 

The partnership between the community, businesses, government, schools, media and law enforcement plays an integral role in reducing crime and improving the overall quality of life.

 

To ensure this philosophy is supported, the Canton Police Department will host, on the first Thursday of each month, a “Coffee with the Cops” beginning on Thursday, January 6, 2011.  The event will take place at 8:00 a.m. at the Canton Police Station at 45 River Road (Route 179).

 

All members of the Canton community – residents, businesses, government officials and media – are invited to attend.

 

Share your thoughts, concerns, suggestions and questions on how the Canton Police Department can best serve our community.

 

Light refreshments will be provided.

Taxes coming due

The second installment of taxes on Real Estate, Personal Property bills and this years Motor Vehicle Supplemental bills are coming due in January. 

You have up and including February 1, 2011 to pay these bills without penalty.

If you would like your taxes posted in December 2010, the payment must be in the office on December 30, 2010 by 4:30.  Otherwise it will need to be postmarked no later than December 31, 2010.  The post office is open until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 31st.

The Motor Vehicle Supplemental bills were mailed out on Tuesday, December 28, 2010.  These bills represent a change in motor vehicle(s) after October 1, 2009 and before September 1, 2010.  If you were expecting a bill and did not receive one, please call the tax office at 860-693-7843 so we can research it.

Reminder to Canton Residents to lock their cars.

The Canton Police Department has been receiving complaints over the past few weeks of vehicles being broken into.  These break-ins have been occurring in both residential neighborhoods and business parking lots.   The police department is urging the community not to leave valuables in their vehicle while it is unattended.  These valuables include purses, wallets, GPS units, cell phones and I Pods.  Vehicles should be locked at all times and if possible, parked in a well lit area. Canton residents are urged to contact the Police Department if they observe any suspicious behavior.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Notice is hereby given to the electors of the Town of Canton and those qualified taxpayers lawfully entitled to vote in Canton Town Meetings pursuant to Section 7-6 of the Connecticut General Statutes that a Special Town Meeting will be commenced on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Canton Public Library & Community Center, 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton, Connecticut, to consider and take action on the following questions:

1.      Shall the Town of Canton, pursuant to Charter Section 9.03(I)(2), accept a Small Town Economic Assistance Grant in the amount of $156,000 for the purposes of constructing a traffic control signal at the intersection of Front and Bridge Street?

2.      Shall the Town of Canton, pursuant to Charter Section 9.03(I)(2), accept a Small Town Economic Assistance Grant in the amount of $200,000 for the purposes of partially funding the reconstruction of Town Bridge?
